MECLA Briefing: Facilitating Procurement of Low Carbon Concrete by Councils in NSW

Concrete is one of the most widely used materials in the world, playing a crucial role in shaping the built environment. However, its production has a significant carbon footprint, primarily due to cement manufacturing.

Advancements in low carbon cement and concrete provide promising opportunities to reduce this impact. For councils, concrete is one of the highest-impact materials used in projects.

To address this, the NSW Government through the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) has run a low emissions specification program to support councils to implement low carbon concrete in their projects. As part of this initiative, DCCEEW collaborated with 10 NSW councils, to facilitate the adoption of low carbon concrete in projects.

The program included two sessions:

  • Session 1: An introduction to low carbon concrete.
  • Session 2: A workshop focused on integrating low carbon concrete requirements into council projects and processes.

To conclude this program NSW Government shares the outcomes and insights gained through council participation in the program, which signals the upcoming interest and demand for low carbon concrete and understands the capabilities and availability of low carbon concrete within NSW.
