MECLA UNSW Laboratories Deep Dive
MECLA participants were recently invited by the University of New South Wales (UNSW) to an extensive tour of the laboratories within the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, including their infrastructure, asphalt and heavy structures laboratories.
MECLA is all about systems change, and innovation in material use is a crucial part of that change. The UNSW School of Civil and Environmental Engineering is the largest engineering faculty in the Southern Hemisphere, and responsible for an immense research output in Australia. During the tour, MECLA members were able to take in six quick-fire presentations on various innovations currently being researched in the labs.
- Ali Kashani presenting on 3D printing concrete in construction,
- Wenkui Dong on nanotechnology applications for concrete sustainability,
- Ailar Hajimohammadi presenting on the use of waste in concrete,
- Taehwon Kim on the beneficiation of mine tailings,
- Ehab Hamed on insulating switch panels, and
- Hamid Valipour on combining timber and steel for reinforced strength.
Each innovation MECLA learned about has a different, unique application to the embodied carbon challenge, and MECLA is excited to continue to collaborate with UNSW to bring research outputs to the Australian market. You can access some of the presentations through the slide deck below.
We would like to thank the UNSW School of Civil and Environmental Engineering for organising this fantastic event and opportunity to learn more about future applications for some of our most important materials.
